Leadership in Practice – When the Bar Is Set High

We often talk about leadership responsibility and how important it is to have good leaders. But sometimes the demands can feel unreasonable, and the higher up in the organization you go, the greater and more complex the responsibilities become.

Being a leader can sometimes feel lonely. You have to take responsibility for decisions—both internally and externally—even when you can’t decide everything on your own. It’s a difficult balance: engagement is best fostered when the team is involved, but the leader is still the one who bears ultimate responsibility.

What Is Expected of Leaders Today

A leader is expected to be capable of many things:

  • Ensure that strategies and long-term plans are implemented, and that everyone knows what is expected within the organization.
  • Inspire, foster engagement, and communicate a clear mission aligned with established goals.
  • Drive engagement and execution, and ensure that all employees are working toward organizational goals.
  • Ensure a sense of security and engagement, and that all employees feel valued.
  • Foster a positive culture by ensuring that all leaders adhere to our values and serve as role models.
  • Be steady and genuine, even when things get rough, and recognize when something is about to go off the rails.

The list could go on and on, and there's a lot to keep in mind and act on.

Support and New Opportunities

Of course, leaders have teams and colleagues with whom they can bounce ideas off, discuss matters, and delegate tasks. But ultimately, it is the leader who bears the ultimate responsibility.

In today’s fast-paced society, leaders need to think differently. How can digital tools and support be used to foster team engagement, motivation, and well-being?
